OUR JOURNEY
June 17, 2019
Today Bob was diagnosed with colon and liver cancer. We don't know much but doctors are hopeful that surgery and chemo can do amazing things. We are numb and just trying to digest as a family. We will keep you posted as we know more but ask for your prayers and adding Bob to any and all prayer chains possible. Love you #manifestingamiracle
June 18, 2019
Hi! We are just returning from Bob’s first appointment. We met with a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Abir, at SMG today. He is part of what will be “our team.” The team will consist of him, the liver specialist and the oncologist. We liked him and liked even more what he had to say.
At this point our plan would be chemo for 3 months. Then liver surgery. Then radiation on rectum followed by CT SCAN of rectum. At this point 80 percent of patients are downgraded in stage and 15 percent have tumor melt away. We will be that 15 percent! Once we get to that stage if Bob needs it, the doctor will do rectal surgery followed by oral chemo.
No prognosis yet as the labs are not back.
Bob is having a pelvic MRI Friday and then we meet with the rest of the team.
We also have a call in to my contact at Sloan and will head there for a second opinion. At this point we feel peaceful with this hopeful plan.
We are hunkering down tonight, making some yummy dinner and hoping to finally sleep tonight. Please continue all the prayers. We feel them and we know they will melt away this horrible disease!!! #Manifestingamiracle
June 24, 2019
Today we met with Dr. Kim, the liver cancer specialist part of the SMG team and we met our the GI nurse navigator. Today felt like A LOT! Although we really liked the doctor, the reality of what is ahead hit our exhausted bodies hard. It seems they are calling the cancer rectal and the way the recital tumor is situated, it is also going into the lymph glands as well as the liver.
The surgery is a big one. They will cut under the breast bone and across. They will also take out the gallbladder. The doctor spoke of a lot of potential dangers that can occur in surgery and after. It scared the shit out of me.
We talked about chemo but that’s really for the doctor tomorrow. The oncologist will become our primary doctor and he will run the show.
We are still planning a 3 months of chemo followed by a scan and then liver surgery. We really really need all of the prayers and more!!!
Tomorrow we get a binder filled with resources regarding our the whole plan and places for everything including CDs and business cards. It sounds like it will become our bible.
We left and hugged in the elevator as Bob calmly assured me it will all be ok. ❤️🙏🏻
I’m so scared and overwhelmed tonight. Tomorrow our miracle baby graduates right after we meet with an oncologist who we need to save Bob’s life. It’s a lot.....#ManifestingaMiracle
June 25,2019
We need MAJOR PRAYERS immediately..,Bob is going in for a lung scan. It CANNOT BE IN HIS LUNGS. Please please pray #ManifestingaMiracle
June 26, 2019
It’s been a crazy week of doctors and graduation and we are now off to Scranton for the next part of our adventure ....
Here is what we know. After meeting with all the doctors at both SMG and SLOAN we were happy to hear that the plan of action would be IDENTICAL at both locations so we will be moving forward with the NJ SMG group.
We just got the call to confirm Bob will have surgery to put in a chemo port on Monday. He will begin 6 hours of chemo Wednesday and will leave with a port which will continue dispensing meds till Friday when it is taken out. This will be the plan every other week. Scans will be repeated in a few months and the plans for surgeries will happen after that. We are anxious to start chemo as the cancers have been confirmed in the lymph nodes as well as some inconclusive evidence in the lungs. The chemo is known to be quite effective so we are hopeful and filled with faith that this will shrink away
We are exhausted from the roller coaster of emotions and plan to just chill after our orientation at Scranton as we prepare for this battle. I will keep you posted as I have updates. Just keep praying like crazy and add Bob to any and all prayer chains, Thanks so much! Love ya! #ManifestingaMiracle
July 8, 2019
We just walked in the house from Bob’s first of 12 chemo treatments. It was a L O N G day but very productive. His treatments consist of some biological medications as well as the “regular “ cancer killing chemo meds.
We had a VERY nice nurse named Carmen and the environment kind of reminded us of the NICU. It is clear that there is a rapport between nurses and patients and there are constant beeping sounds just like in the NICU.
Bob was visited by a snack cart and an adorable therapy dog named Sadie!!! He left the treatment room with a pump contained in a black bag he wears either across his chest or as a fanny pack. He will wear this for 48 hours as it dispenses the medication and it will be removed on Friday. There are some potential side effects that we are aware of, the most important being super sensitivity to cold. No cold drinks or opening the freezer/fridge for Bob!
We had a lot of giggles today thanks to texts from friends. Bob also had a couple of phone calls that passed the time. It made the many hours there a lot easier to take. We go back Friday and again next week for blood. The next Chemo will be 2 weeks from today.
That’s all for now. Keep praying!! #ManifestingaMiracle
July 10, 2019
It’s been a really really rough week for Bob but he seems to be coming out of it...
Just left the doctor. Bob’s blood counts are good. Doctor thinks Bob has a low level of a certain liver enzyme which is making him feel all the horrid symptoms. His diarrhea has been awful and he’s lost 20lbs as of this morning. Interestingly the loss of weight is actually good for fighting this cancer!
As luck would have it, Bob is suffering with terrible tooth pain and swelling this morning. Since his numbers are good, the doctor ok’d him having it taken care of ASAP. Thankfully he is going to the oral surgeon at 2:30.
Praying he continues to feel well and handles the next chemo even better. We will have a couple other meds in place to hopefully prevent extreme nausea and diarrhea next Wednesday.
Keep praying...🙏🏻❤️
Believe it or not he’s having oral surgery tomorrow.... with a local anesthetic since regular anesthesia could affect the liver. Hygienist says... “well he can have ice cream all day” but….. he can’t because the cold makes his throat feel like it’s closing thanks to chemo😳!!! You seriously can’t make this shit up!! Jen keeps saying it will make a great book one day! #ManifestingaMiracle
July 11, 2019
Bob had oral surgery to remove an infected wisdom tooth. They called it a “crownectomy “ because the whole tooth was removed but not the root. Since the anesthesia would affect Bob’s liver adversely he had the surgery with only a local anesthetic. He’s in terrible pain despite taking Tylenol with codeine. My poor guy cannot catch a break. On the positive side, the surgeon noted that the area was very infected and the choice to get this done was both smart and necessary. He’s on a heavy duty antibiotics in order to prevent further complications. He’s eating mashed potatoes and pudding for the next few days. We are praying the antibiotics don’t make the diarrhea even worse. Bob needs your prayers. Please continue to lift him up in good thoughts and prayers. We sure are on a roller coaster.❤️ #ManifestingaMiracle
Photos below are from Kayleigh’s graduation party on July 13. Bob had just had oral surgery and could hardly eat but in what would become Bob’s style, he put a smile on his face and kept living life. It was such a lovely day and he enjoyed the company of so many we love along with a delicious micro brew or two. Bob was showing us all how to LIVE!
July 17, 2019
Bob had his second round of chemo today. His blood test indicated that his white blood cells were a little low so they added something to his cocktail to stimulate bone marrow to make more white blood cells. They also added something called Amend to help even more with nausea. People have said that his oncologist is talented but dry however every appointment we have, Bob has him laughing and has the doctor sharing stories from his own life!😀👍🏼
Our infusion nurse Carmen is great and she takes great care of both of us. Bob enjoyed a box lunch from the generous volunteers as well as a visit from Honey today’s therapy dog.
It was a long day, we were there from 8:30 - 3:30. Bob is home now and seems pretty good. We’re both tired but he’s hanging out doing some computer work.
Thanks as always for the prayers. Keep them coming!!!😘❤️ #ManifestingaMiracle
July 31, 2019
Today Bob received round 3 of his chemo treatments. Our regular nurse was out today so it was rather lackluster for us. We met another cute dog, this one named Lulu. The day was low key.... we basically chatted, did some work and chilled.
Good news from the doctor visit. Bob’s bone marrow responded well to the Nulesta last week raising his white blood cell count to a normal level. He will not need this shot on Friday when we return to infusion.
Bob is hanging in and praying his symptoms are mild this round. His bottom is the most sore it has been and he is truly uncomfortable in any position. Today besides praying for the cancer to melt away I am also asking for prayers for his comfort.
Not much else to share. Keep the prayers coming!!! #ManifestingaMiracle
Photos below are from our first trip to the medical marajuana dispensary on August 7. It was quite an education complete with a binder filled with different strains and options of marajuana. We were amused to learn that the people who provided service from behind the counter were called “BUDtenders!” Such a clever play on words!
Though it was a gorgeous summer day when we departed our home, our return trip was in a monsoon followed by flooding! Yet another adventure for us!
August 14. 2019
We’ve just returned from chemo number 4. Today felt like a long day. Since this is the fourth chemo, the doctor has scheduled a scan to assess progress and efficacy of the chemo. The scan will be Thursday August 22 (and yes Kayleigh leaves August 24..., we like to really pack in the important things!🙄🙏🏻).
If you could add in extra prayers for the scan and a great transition for Kayleigh, we would all be so grateful!❤️🙏🏻
Bob’s WBC COUNT is very low today so he will need the Nulesta shot on Friday to stimulate the bone marrow. He will again take the 2 Claritin a day to counteract the bone pain from this.
Our wonderful nurse Carmen explained that at this point the meds are really building up in his system so the side effects may intensify from here forward. A particularly tricky one is cold neuropathy.
Although the scan is scary for us we are looking forward to positive results, we are also looking forward to hearing the next step.
Finally, we had another therapy dog visit today from a big furry guy named Rocco. These are some of our favorite parts of Wednesday chemo days. These dogs provide quite a lift!❤️
Ok, that’s the report. Hoping and praying the Bob’s side effects are mild this round and that the chemo continues to do its job! Thanks in advance for all the continued prayers! #ManifestingaMiracle
August 26, 2019
We JUST arrived home from chemo number 5 along with the results of Bob’s CT scan. The news is GOOD! The doctor sees improvements in the pulmonary, liver and lymph glands! He said that this is the beginning of a nice response! There is no mention of the rectal tumor because that is slower to respond to chemo AND it is only picked up on MRI which will be done again in a couple of months. Our plan moving forward is to continue chemo and repeat scan after treatment 8 in mid October.
Chemo today was uneventful until we left. As we walked to the elevator Bob began to feel extremely nauseous and his hands began to sting. By the time we got to the car he was wheezing and then felt he couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t talk and he became pale and clammy. We quickly returned to the doctor and the infusion room. They were great. Apparently this is a reaction that can occur from one of the drugs. It was brought on by the slightest change in temperature... the handle to the car door could have been cool.... and this was triggered. Although he felt he couldn’t breathe he was actually breathing... His speaking was impacted by something called “twisted tongue”, again related to this reaction. Bob was wrapped in heated towels with extra on his neck and hands. We sat for about 25 min and his symptoms became much less intense. We were able to leave for good soon after.
The reactions have come fast and furiously this time. Once home he experienced intense stomach issues that came on without warning. Add to that the fact that I’ve been to CVS 3 times trying to pick up anti nausea medicine that hasn’t quite been ready..... Thank goodness we started the day with such positive news!!!
All things considered, despite feeling wiped out today Bob says, “the chemo is working! If I have to put up with all of this to ensure it continues working , I will.” It’s crazy to say we thank God for chemo but we do. That and all of the continued prayers and such abundant support. ❤️ We are an extremely lucky family! #ManifestingaMiracle

September 11, 2019
Just back from a LONG day at chemo. We got there at 8:15 and got home at 2:45!
Bob’s labs are good and as the doctor said “from the outside everything looks perfect!” We are hoping that the inside is reflecting the same.
Chemo was uneventful (thank God). Dr. Wax added Benadryl and a steroid to prevent a possible reaction like Bob had last time. We also stayed 30min extra to be sure he was good. Thankfully he was!
Probably the most interesting part of our day was seeing Mrs. Coogan, one of my childhood neighbors, and her daughter Jeanie in the infusion room. She’s such a delight! She explained that she has non Hodgkin lymphoma and that it was found “by accident” on a routine test. She is doing well and if I remember correctly only needs 2 more treatments. Anyway as we ended our conversation she said to me, “tell Bob to pray to his mom. I used to see her at daily mass and she would always talk to me about you guys. She was so proud!❤️” It’s so weird but I felt like that was a message he was meant to hear, almost like a God wink. As we were ready to leave we went over together to say goodbye and again, this time directly to Bob, she said “pray to your mom” and she went on to share the same story. I’m certain that we were meant to see her there today. There are no accidents.....🙏🏻
We are home now and Bob is relaxing with his favorite blanket (yes he’s chilly even in this weather!). We are praying for less side effects this round and that the chemo is melting away all the cancer in his body. Thanks for keeping him in your prayers. As Bob said this morning, “We’ve got this!!!”🙏🏻😎👍🏼 #ManifestingaMiracle
I spent my morning at the 9/11 memorial practicing yoga in quiet reflection. During chemo Bob continued to take calls from customers and work on his computer. His work ethic was like no other!
September 25, 2019
Today was chemo round 7 for Bob. The doctor reported his blood counts were good and all med cocktails would be given full speed ahead. Benadryl is part of the cocktail these days due to the reaction he had previously and today it put Bob right to sleep. He had a nice healing nap while killing some cancer cells today!
While we were in the infusion room, I spent a lot of time communicating with my two best NICU friends as we tried to coordinate resources and support for a friend of mine who has recently been admitted for preterm labor and will likely have a preemie in the NICU. Bob and I were reminded of our own journey almost exactly 19 years ago and together we reflected on all we overcame at that time. Thinking about that time reinforced our confidence that we will overcome this hurdle as well. Today reminded us of all we are so incredibly grateful for. So many big and small blessings helping us each and every day.🙏🏻❤️
We are home now and Bob is cozy and comfortable. We pray the side effects are minimal and that the cancer is just melting away! Thanks so much for your continued love and prayers!! #ManifestingaMiracle
Photos of our “miracle baby” at Parent’s Weekend 2019. We enjoyed some family time at an orchard picking apples, flowers and enjoying the food and beer trucks!
October 9, 2019
Today was treatment number 8 for Bob and there is a lot to report.
Poor Bob never really felt well after treatment 7. He continued to feel nauseous and exhausted even on days when he should have been symptom free. He lost 8lbs in a week.
After reaching out to the doctor on Friday 10/4 because he had been unable to eat, he received 2 hours of hydration Friday. It was a game changer! He rallied and we even enjoyed dinner Friday night and a nice ride to see the changing foliage Saturday ( His idea!!!😎👍🏼) Things seemed good!
Until Monday.... again nausea, complete exhaustion and extreme pain set in. He did not sleep at all Monday due to excruciating pain.
On Tuesday he slept basically 24 hours, unable to eat or drink very much at all. It was scary as hell!
This morning as we prepared for our appointments he could barely stand. I was sure they would find him unable to take treatment however the GREAT NEWS was that his labs were PICTURE PERFECT as were his vitals!!! So first he took 2 liters of hydration and then chemo was full steam ahead.
His exhaustion remained today and he dozed for most of the time we were there. He even shooed away the dog visit which shows how crappy he felt. We were there a LONG TIME today from 8am -3 pm.
We are home now and I’m happy to report he’s eating a little pastina and resting comfortably.
Apparently this extreme fatigue is to be expected and will be a hurdle to get through. It won’t go away quickly but we are promised that it will eventually go away. The neuropathy continues and now that it’s cool out he is even more aware of it. Lots of bundling up and nifty strategies for Bob.❤️
The big day is October 18. He will have his scan around 9am that day and that will give us the insight into if we continue chemo. We are so hopeful that we have already continued to schedule chemo appointments 👍🏼. We welcome prayers and novenas for amazing scans. This road is bumpy but will be so worth it when Bob is cancer free!!!
So that’s the update. Sorry it’s so long but now you have the whole picture!🙏🏻❤️ Thanks for your continued love and prayers!!! #ManifestingaMiracle
photos from our road trip to The Walkway Across the Hudson on Saturday October 5, 2019. What a difference a few days makes.
October 23, 2019
Here’s an afternoon update on Bob who has been hospitalized for the infection.
Bob had a pretty pain free night but could not sleep. The doctors and nurses began at 6am today and have just settled down now. It’s been a VERY BUSY DAY!!
His primary care doctor and 2 of his residents came in, as did his rectal surgeon, infectious disease, wound care, oncologist, dietician. He is obviously being very well cared for!
Basically they have adjusted pain meds so he can rest, changed antibiotics to a new one,( it’s IV), and they are continuing hydration as well. The plan is to heal him as we wait for a bowel movement to analyze for CDIFF. So far... no BM. Honestly it doesn’t seem to be pointing to CDIFF for many reasons but they still need to test.
I got some great wound care training. I feel really good about flushing his wound and using a new kind of dressing. I was truly impressed with the wound care specialist and the time she took with us!
The dietician and I spent a lot of time discussing Bob’s needs, aversions and issues with cold. She came up with some good high protein options such as special jello, pudding and ice cream that warms but doesn’t melt... all of these contain 20 grams of protein and he will be served these along with each meal. He’s also being given an appetite stimulant since we really can’t bring the medical marajuana to the hospital 😉👍🏼. He took mash potatoes and about 3/4 of the jello at lunch so that’s great.
Father Tom came this afternoon and spent some nice time with him. He then gave a beautiful blessing to Bob along with the anointing of the sick. We were thrilled for his company and the blessing.
My dear friend Marybeth and her daughter Caitlin surprised me this morning with coffee and breakfast. They kindly brought me some clean clothes and freshening up items. It was truly what I needed! It’s amazing the difference being clean makes!!!
We are honestly in great shape here. Bob is getting everything he needs. Much much more than I was able to give him at home. He’s pretty sick and needs to heal. Obviously he’s missing chemo today and that's fine. He will regain his strength, heal the wound with a lot more protein intake and he’ll be better than ever for the next round he takes.
Thanks so much for the continued prayers. We feel them. We are both comfortable and so peaceful here. This is just another bump in the road on this crazy cancer journey. We sure can’t wait to get Bob back to his good health but we understand that it’s God’s plan for us to just take one day at a time!😘🙏🏻 #ManifestingaMiracle
October 24, 2019
Bob had a good night. He slept well but remains quite tired. His body is working really hard to get better!
Again today he met with many doctors. Today the news began to get more encouraging!!! Bob is no longer neutropenic, meaning that his white blood cell count has returned to normal! God is good! His pain remains high when not on painkillers but when he has them in his system he is good.
The appetite stimulant is helping and today he ate the most he has in weeks! It wasn’t much for regular people but it was good. The best part is that so far he has also consumed 2 , 20 g of protein jellos. He knows protein is what heals his wound and he is fighting with all his might!!!
Physical therapy came in and got him walking today and he did really well. He’s making a few jokes today which is another sign that he’s on his way back to wellness.
C Diff seems more and more unlikely because he STILL hasn’t pooped. So honestly that’s thrilling because we didn’t need that on top of everything else. Now that he’s eating I’m sure he will do what he needs to do soon...😉👍🏼
Everything else is status quo. We likely won’t see any more doctors today so he will just keep getting stronger and they will assess tomorrow.
This has been quite an adventure but all things considered we are doing ok. It’s truly such a blessing that they gave us such a big beautiful private room with a bed for me. The gorgeous blue gowns and latex gloves are just an added bonus. 😂. Seriously though, we are good and just so grateful that we are in a place where so many people are working together to make him well again.
Please keep praying! Those prayers are working!!!😘❤️ #ManifestingaMiracle
October 25, 2019
We got the news this afternoon that Bob will need to stay the weekend at the hospital. Although he is doing well, healing and eating a bit more.... The antibiotic that he needs is only available through IV. We will be here till Monday.
This broke our heart at first but the reality is that he is in the best place getting amazing care. We wouldn’t want him to go home and then end up back here soon after.
With this news I begged for the doctor to write orders for a shower and I was happily able to help Bob shower and get clean again! He looks, feels and SMELLS like a new man!!
I needed a shower desperately as well so I left for a short while, showered, did some cleaning up at home and picked up dinner for us.
Some of the cool things of the day are Bob getting some “energy work” ( like reiki but shorter) and a brief walk to exercise his legs. I got a 15 min massage in the caregiver support center which was lovely.
We are settled in our happy little room. I brought Bob his Notre Dame Jersey for Saturday game day so he’s all set.
Please keep the prayers coming. We feel them!! Thanks to everyone for all of the incredible support. We are so touched and feel so blessed to be enveloped in such love!!!❤️ #ManifestingaMiracle
Photos of Bob’s awesome hospital room filled with windows and a bed for me.
October 28, 2019
Great News! BOB IS HOME!!!!😃👍🏼
Bob was released this afternoon after 6 long days in Overlook Hospital! It was definitely the best place for him to heal and in hindsight he probably should have been admitted earlier. Our experience there couldn’t have been better! The oncology floor is amazing and the fact that they gave me a bed and let me stay in the huge window filled room with Bob made the whole experience much more tolerable. I actually felt weepy saying goodbye to the nurses as we left. They were really great to us!
Bob will remain on oral antibiotics for 10 days. His wound looks so much better but they need to be sure that the infection is completely gone. It is becoming easier for him to sit but he’s not completely there yet. Thanks to the wound care specialist, I am now armed even better to be his wound care nurse again. We left the hospital with some good products that will help.
Nutrition is huge for Bob. He needs to take in as much protein as possible to heal and stay strong. I brought home some of the high protein jellos and ordered some from Amazon as well. Of course having good ole home cooking is going to help as well! I’m cooking baked chicken, mashed potatoes and broccoli tonight! Just the idea of no hospital food makes us both smile!
Bob is going to have off from chemo this round. He needs to build up his strength and let his body heal completely. He will resume November 6, back on schedule. During that week we will also consult with both surgeons and the infectious disease doctor to determine the next steps of our journey.
Bob is EXHAUSTED and so am I. He’s resting comfortably watching all the channels they didn’t have on the hospital. I ran to the grocery store and am getting all the wash caught up. When his meds are ready I will grab them. It will definitely be an early night.
Thank you for the incredible love and prayers sent our way. Gestures big and small made this past week so much easier for us. We are beyond grateful and feel so blessed. Life feels almost normal again now that we are home. That itself is a huge blessing! I’ll keep you posted as Bob progresses..... hopefully you will not be getting a huge text like this again until after chemo November 6!😘 #ManifestingaMiracle
Since Bob was “safe” in the hospital, I felt (slightly) comfortable going to visit Kayleigh for her birthday in Scranton. I was lucky enough to have two of our favorite people join me. Photos are from that afternoon.
November 6, 2019
This morning we easily fell into the “it’s chemo day “ routine as I applied Bob’s anti nausea patch and packed our grown up version of a diaper bag, filling it with treats, warm socks, chargers and books to keep us occupied. These days the treats are mostly high protein to help Bob remain strong and continue to heal his wound. I laughed with Bob on the ride up the hill that I am more focused on counting his grams of protein than I am on counting my Weight Watcher points. 😉 ( that’s a worry for another day...!)
It’s chilly in the mornings and Bob feels the cold intensely so the heat went on and the car was soon a balmy 85 degrees!!🏝 it was definitely a tropical feel! Thank heavens for dual thermostats!!!
It was good to see Dr. Wax, our oncologist. He was not on call during our hospital stay so today felt a bit like greeting an old friend.
Bob was tired going into today and with good reason... Dr. Wax informed us that Bob had THE WORST case of cellulitis he has EVER seen. Wow! We knew he was very sick but we are both glad we didn’t realize quite how serious it really was!!
The great news is though that today’s blood work was absolutely perfect and the wound is healing quite nicely! ( I personally take great pride in that since I’ve been the one cleaning and tending the wound before and after the hospital!😃👍🏼❤️)
Today was the 9th chemo and it was rather uneventful. Our nurse Carmen is away at a convention but will be back when the pump comes off and Bob sits for hydration Friday. As I mentioned, Bob is still very fatigued so he slept a good portion of the day. We did have a visit from a pup which is always fun and a nice distraction.
After chemo Bob had an appointment with the rectal surgeon who also wanted to “check out Bob’s butt!” He too was pleased with how nicely things are healing!!
It’s a busy week for us. Tomorrow Bob and I will meet with the liver surgeon and possibly talk about the plans moving forward. Then in the afternoon we will meet with his infectious disease doctor up in Warren.
Friday we need to see the doctor who writes the script for the medical marijuana, then have the pump removed and hydration followed by a visit to Bob’s GP. And finally on Saturday we are hopeful that Bob can get to the dispensary in order to get something to help him sleep again!!
I’m happy to share that Bob left chemo hungry and asked for a late lunch of Chinese chicken, an egg roll and fried rice! I ran out for it and happily watched him eat a good portion!!!!
I also made a quick trip to home goods because although I have throw blankets on the couch Bob is constantly cold. Thank goodness they have a huge supply right now and I was able to get a large Sherpa lined blanket to keep him cozy and warm!
We are finally settled in for the night with a delicious dinner made by a friend. We are so glad the infection seems to be gone and we are back on track for kicking cancer’s ass!!
As always, thank you for the abundant kindness, generosity and prayers. We continue to be awed by the many true blessings the awful diagnosis of cancer has brought us!!!❤️ Seriously! We are loved by the most amazing people!!!
Please keep praying!! We feel your prayers at work! #ManifestingaMiracle
November 20, 2019
Today Bob completed round 10 of chemo!!! 5 months of this crazy adventure are behind us!
As we sat in the lab this morning Bob teased the patient before us that he was going to get “the good chemo chair” because he was ahead of us. (we obviously recognized this other patient from previous visits😉). Our conversation continued in the waiting room and we found ourselves with a new connection and friend. ❤️. After Bob met with Dr. Wax he headed to the infusion room to find that our new friend had chosen a different chair, thus leaving Bob’s “favorite chair” open and waiting for him👍🏼!!!! Yet another example of God’s blessings showing up in our lives daily!!!
Bob’s check up with Dr. Wax went well. His weight has remained the same and bp and blood levels are good!! Bob told the doctor about a strange episode he had on Saturday:
On Saturday night we finally got out with friends. (👍🏼) After enjoying a lovely dinner we returned home and proceeded up the front steps. As Bob approached the top step, he tumbled backward down the steps. I was behind him, trying to catch him and proceed to fall as well. Amazingly neither one of us was hurt and the bottle of wine Bob held in his hand landed upright and unbroken. Once we dusted ourselves off Bob explained that it was as if his brain forgot to tell his leg to move....😳. After explaining this to the doctor we’ve learned that it was likely just a different version of neuropathy rearing its ugly head!
On our way home we stopped at CVS and ran into our dear friend and Kayleigh’s NICU NURSE, Linda. It was so nice to see her and her hugs reminded us of that scary time 19 years ago and how our faith helped us through that time. We left smiling knowing THAT was another “God Wink!”
Bob was starving after chemo and asked for his new favorite post chemo snack, Chinese food! Although a friend is bringing his favorite meal tonight for dinner, it was nice to see him DEVOUR something for late lunch!
We are both exhausted. Though these days don’t require much physically, they drain us emotionally and mentally. We continue to be grateful for our dear friend/nurse Carmen who is there with support and knowledge for even the strangest questions.
Bob will have 2 more rounds of chemo and then scans in early to mid January. There is no plan for a definite next step. We’ve learned that everything will depend on what the scans say.
Please keep Bob in your prayers. Pray that he can now continue, complication free and that the cancer just melts from his body. THAT would be the best Christmas gift we could ever receive!!!!🙏🏻 #ManifestingaMiracle
Our 21st wedding anniversary was November 21, 2019. We celebrated at our go to spot, Vinny’s where we were joined by our friend’s adorable daughter who insisted on sitting with us. It was a delightful evening!
Thanksgiving was November 28, 2019. We spent time with family. It was a lovely day filled with blessings and gratitude!
November 29, 2019
Just wanted to let you know that Bob has been admitted to Overlook for another abscess infection and extreme pain. It’s been a long day. We were at the oncologist this morning because of pain and then we had to wait for a bed at the hospital.
We are back on the oncology floor with some of the same wonderful nurses though a much smaller room🙁.....
Nothing more to report right now... waiting to get much needed meds into him. Please just pray for him. It’s all just a bit too much.🙏🏻 #ManifestingaMiracle
November 30, 2019
It’s been a long day already....
Bob has a rough night, with very little sleep despite the pain meds. I got here around 7am. I didn’t stay overnight because Kayleigh is home and I’m trying desperately to give both Bob and Kayleigh as much love and attention as I can.
Shockingly the doctors didn’t not arrive early and really didn’t start coming till a bit after 8. It was determined the abcess would need to be drained and that it would be done right in the room. Though this terrified Bob based on his past experience, the residents who did it made it somewhat more tolerable for Bob. To our amazement they got far more puss than the last time. A further investigation has to be made as to why this continues to occur. I believe that will happen this week.
We were then surprised that they came in and wanted to give Bob a central iv line in his upper arm. It seems his veins are not behaving as well as they did on our last visit. He does have a port but we’ve been instructed that it is only for chemo and we vehemently deny allowing anyone else to access it. The midline was inserted (I had to leave for this surgery) and Bob now has a special new bracelet and a sign to identify that he has this.
We are in a tiny dark room this time. It’s making me a little batty not seeing any natural light. There are not many patients here so there is a POSSIBILITY that we may be able to switch rooms later in the day. This would surely help our psyche!!!
The impending storm is also adding stress to our lives. Kayleigh will now leave for school tonight in order to avoid the storm. I guess she and I weren’t mentally prepared for that and we are both a little sad. I feel like I’ve hardly seen her this trip. Thank God she will be back in less than 2 weeks.
Thanks to this latest infection, it has been confirmed that Bob will miss chemo on December 4. This does not mean that he has to wait the full two weeks for the next round. It’s possible he could have chemo on December 11 and then the last during Christmas Week resulting in the final chemo pump removal on Christmas Eve.
Bob is such a trooper, he’s so sick again, in such pain and not eating yet he continues to keep his positive attitude and even cracked a joke here or there. Although I too believe this is all for the greater good, I’m starting to lose it a bit. Cancer is really stealing so much of our lives and a great deal of joy. I’m trying to put my head down and push on the best I can. As always I’m (we’re) incredibly grateful for all the kindness and blessings that continue to come our way. Please keep praying. I know that God is heating our prayers. I think he’s just taking us on a hell of a roller coaster ride to get to our miracle!!!❤️ #manifestingamiracle
December 1, 2019
It’s been a pretty quiet day here in Overlook Hospital. Bob is basically still the same, in pain, not eating much, resting and getting IV meds. Right now it’s those meds that are helping to rid the infection and get him back to kicking cancer’s ass!
Our friend and fellow Steelers fanatic Glen shared his NFL ticket with Bob so he was able to watch the game. In preparation I brought his Rocky Blier jersey and terrible towel to the hospital today. It must have worked because the Steelers beat the Browns 20-13!!! Hooray!!!
In other news Kayleigh got back to school safely last night and found that many friends had returned early as well. She had a fun night and awoke to the best surprise of no classes Monday due to the storm!!!
Bob will be here for a few more days. I’ll be hanging with him all night tonight. As we did last time, we have fallen into a little routine. I try to go for a walk every couple of hours and I visit the coffee shop for peppermint tea for me and always something I hope Bob will eat... ( he never does but I keep trying!!)
Not much else to report. Stay safe in this weather and please keep praying! We know with your prayers and ours we are #manifestingamiracle! 😘❤️
Another hospital room, another Steelers Jersey AND The Terrible Towel for the game. Also pictured is a sweet surprise from one of Santa’s Elves. Our porch was secretly decorated with colorful holiday lights, providing a bit of cheer in a gloomy situation.
December 2, 2019
We are home! It’s been a REALLY LONG 4 days!!! We are exhausted....
Short update is that Bob is ok. The drain on the abcess is doing its job. Yes continuing to develop abscess is an issue and they have a plan to prevent it but more on that another day. Grateful we are home in our cozy house with our nice warm bed and a delicious meal dropped off by a dear friend!!!
I don’t have the energy to write anymore but please know we are well! Keep praying! #manifestingamiracle
December 4, 2019
We’ve just walked in from a long afternoon with Bobs surgeon and Oncologist. Bob has remained extremely weak and in excruciating pain. His white blood cells are dangerously low and he received a shot to try to get his bone marrow to produce more and boost the count. He needs these to go up to heal.
Bob will have his “BIG” ct scans and pelvic MRI TOMORROW and surgery on Monday for a colostomy. The doctors want the scan done now because they don’t want any “surprises” when they open him up.😳
I feel like I’m not ready for these big scans... I haven’t started Novenas, I haven’t had time to get the prayer warriors going.... Honestly, I’m scared to death! They HAVE to show progress!!!🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️. I will be at 7 am mass tomorrow if anyone is able to join me.
The colostomy bag surgery is not what we would wish for but the idea is To allow his rectum to rest and prevent further complications.
The surgery is serious and will be painful as any abdominal surgery is. We will remain in the hospital for a week. I will be with Bob the entire time. I am going to take a short leave from work beginning Monday until after Christmas. This will allow me to give him my full attention and to be his advocate. He needs me now. This entire process will require a learning curve for both of us.
We are exhausted and mentally and emotionally drained. We will keep you posted every step of the way but we will take these next few days to prepare, regroup and pray.
Please keep praying! We certainly need all the prayers we can get! #ManifestingaMiracle
December 6, 2019
Our prayers have been answered and we have made a Christmas Miracle!!!!
Bob just got a call from the surgeon and HIS ENTIRE RECTAL CANCER IS GONE!!!!
He WILL NOT have surgery on Monday since it is now unnecessary!!!!
We are awestruck with the goodness and kindness of our Lord!!! We have made a miracle through the power of prayer!!!! Thank you for praying with us!!!
We don’t have any information on the other areas because the surgeon was only focused on his area. We look forward to the call from the oncologist! And we look forward to Bob gaining his strength back. This has been rough on him and He’s elated but still so weak!!!
Thank you!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! For your prayers!!!! We love you!!! #ManifestingaMiracle
“SUPER BOB, Kicking Cancer’s Ass!”
December 10, 2019
We continued to be buoyed by the news we received Friday! It is truly a miracle and God’s Grace that Bob’s rectal tumor has melted away however we still have mountains to climb....
Bob has continued to feel awful. His intense pain and nausea have become worse causing him to sleep constantly and eat next to nothing. His fatigue is extreme. We just left the rectal surgeon who after examining him feels that although the abscess is gone, the wound is again infected and Bob will need IV ANTIBIOTICS. As he said this we braced for what we expected was going to be yet another hospital stay...😳👎🏻. Instead, since the antibiotics are given only once a day, Bob will meet with an infectious disease doctor tomorrow and will then get his antibiotics at the Florham Park infusion lab. We will determine tomorrow if we will head to Florham Park daily or if a nurse can come to the house. The important thing is to get rid of this infection!!!
Since the surgeons and the oncologist work together, we had a quick check in with the oncologist today too. He ordered blood work for today and canceled our appointment for tomorrow. He wants to be sure the Nulesta he gave Bob last week is doing its job and increasing his white blood cells in order to build strength and get rid of this infection.
All chemo is on hold until Bob is better. He is much too weak to have it right now. Obviously we hope the infection leaves quickly and that he begins to feel strong and well again because we have 2 more tumors to melt away, the tumor in the liver and the lungs. We have faith that our prayers as well as modern medicine will help to rid Bob’s body of ALL the cancer cells.
I’m so grateful that I am home with Bob now. He really needs me for things both big and small. It is truly a gift to be able to be here for him.
Please keep praying. We are so grateful to God for our miracle but we are not done yet! I will keep you posted whenever there is anything new.🙏🏻🎄❤️
Update on Bob 12/18
Today we took a gorgeous ride to the Medical Center to meet with Bob’s oncologist and surgeon. Honestly, I couldn’t stop commenting on the beauty in nature today as all the ice covered trees glistened in today’s glorious sunshine.
We were armed with homemade cookies (thanks to Kayleigh) and gifts for the people who are making a difference for Bob. The oncologist was happy to see Bob’s numbers beginning to look pretty good again. Right now he mentioned that Bob is slightly anemic and of course still fighting the infection but otherwise good. Despite Bob’s hope to begin chemo again, the doctor explained how important it is for Bob to get stronger first. He told Bob to keep healing and resting and set up an appointment for New Years Eve. (a check in and we will assess chemo from there.....)
The surgeon was also thrilled with the healing of the wound area. He reported that there is still some swelling but the progress is fantastic. He prescribed the continuation of antibiotics for 10 more days.
Speaking of antibiotics: for the last week we have trekked each day to Florham Park for an infusion of antibiotics. These drugs are so strong that they are usually only administered in the hospital or an infusion lab.
On Monday Bob had a procedure to insert a picc line into his left arm. After that he got his last antibiotic infusion at the center. Yesterday, a visiting nurse came to the house and taught me how to administer not only the antibiotics into the picc line but saline and heparin as well.
To say that I have grown on this journey is an understatement!!! Not only do I drive places I couldn’t have imagined before but I now do many things outside my comfort zone including giving my husband these powerful drugs!
We ran into some of our familiar “chemo friends” while we were there. We don’t know their names but we know pieces of their stories and they know pieces of ours. As we shared holiday greetings and wishes for a healthy and blessed new year I got a little teary eyed. It’s been a long 6 months filled with peaks and valleys. We are SO much closer to wellness then we were in June but we still have a ways to go. We are not the same people we were back then however I’d like to believe we are better people today. We get it and we know how blessed we are. We won’t have any more appointments until after Christmas and I pray with all of my heart that things will remain just status quo as Bob heals and gets stronger. Please keep the prayers coming. Bob is making good progress but is still so tired and weak. We know it is a result of all of your prayers that we are MANIFESTING A MIRACLE!!!
Photos of the Winter Wonderland we experienced on December 18. Instructions for the IV infusion I kept close at hand as I became Bob’s antibiotic infusion nurse. Kayleigh sharing a little of her holiday cheer with her dad as we visited with dear friends.
Bob was buoyed by his good news in early December and he began to feel a bit stronger on the antibiotics. We decided to take a ride to a brewery in Sommerville where we had dinner and drinks with Bob’s best friend John and his wife Jeannine. It was a perfect winter day!
Making memories with those we love, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2019
Update on Bob 12/31
Today was a day like no other....
Kayleigh and I started the day at the funeral of our dear family friend and neighbor, Anne Dolan.... she was a 48 yr old wife and mother who died suddenly 12/26 from complications of pneumonia. We are still in broken hearted shock.
We returned home from the funeral to find my car GONE....
Kayleigh and I were shocked because Bob’s oncologist appointment was for noon and it was barely 11.
We soon learned the doctor had called and asked him to come earlier because the infusion lab was closing at 3. Bob was already at the doctor and had driven himself.!😳
This doesn’t seem all that concerning except for the fact that Bob’s neuropathy has recently migrated to his calves and he took a fall earlier this week. There was NO WAY I wanted him driving. Now I needed to get to him immediately but without the burden of having an extra car at the chemo lab!
Thank God for friends who are like family! Within minutes our neighbor and friend Jeff had me in his car on the way to SMG on Diamond Hill. I joined Bob in the very crowded and hectic infusion room.
Although they wanted Bob early, they were super crowded due to the holiday and accommodating Monday and Wednesday patients and his long treatment did not even begin till after 12......😳
We met new friends today, a lady on her third treatment for stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She was there with her husband and daughter. Both husband and wife are teachers and we shared stories, talked about side effects, insurance and retirement. As they left we prayed for for her well being with such a frightening diagnosis.🙏🏻❤️
On our way home we were starving. We decided to “celebrate “ NYE like senior citizens and headed to Lorenzo’s. Because it was before 5 we were only the second table to sit. We weren’t even embarrassed as we ordered some comfort food and just caught our breath. We were thrilled to see one of my former co-workers (Eileen Maher) and a childhood friend of Bob’s (Jimmy Trotter). I guess we are not the only dorky blue plate special people!!!😂
We are home now staying awake only for the sake of waiting up for Kayleigh tonight.
As we say goodbye to 2019 we are grateful for the blessings.... all the people who have supported us on this journey and the miracle that dissolved Bob’s tumor. We pray tonight that 2020 will be filled with more miracles and blessings for all of us, our family and friends. This week has reminded us that life is so precious and we must live each day to its absolute fullest! That is our agenda! Tonight’s dinner conversation was overflowing with our plans for when Bob is well again! We can’t wait to get started!!!
Happy New Year! Many Blessings! We love you!!!! #ManifestingaMiracle
Update on Bob 1/7
Every day is an adventure when cancer is the diagnosis!
This morning as I went to leave for work I found blood and puss pouring from Bob’s bottom. He already had Appointments scheduled with the oncologist and surgeon but I quickly realized Kayleigh could not be in charge of taking him. I called out from school, helped Bob shower and got him up to see the doctors.
Sadly, he has another infection! He’s in terrible pain as well as suffering from neuropathy that has now traveled all the way up to his knees.
The surgeon wants to see what’s going on “in there” so Bob will have outpatient surgery tomorrow.
In the meantime, he needs IV antibiotics so we trekked back to Florham Park for antibiotic infusion this afternoon. We will have to go back there tomorrow after surgery and on Thursday he will have ANOTHER surgery to reinstall the PICC line so that I can administer it at home.
Bob is exhausted and drained. He cannot eat tonight due to prep for tomorrow... it’s really all too much!!
Please keep him in your prayers and pray he doesn’t need a colostomy bag. We were shocked and sad when it was brought up again today. As he said today... he just wants to feel normal again....🙏🏻💙🙏🏻 #ManifestingaMiracle
UPDATE ON BOB 1/8/2020
Bob is done with surgery. It started late but was successful. The doctor described it as “a garden variety fistula.” He inserted a “seton” which will stay in and keep the abcess wicked. He’s in considerable pain.
We just arrived at Florham Park for his IV MEDS. These drugs are so specialized they only have them on this campus. So here we are. Bob is still a bit out of it....
Tomorrow morning we will be back here at 730am for PICC line surgery and then 11 am to Livingston for the infectious disease doctor....
Bob had a really rough night last night. I’m hoping tonight is better. I’ll be honest, I’m completely exhausted, physically and emotionally..... I’m looking forward to a quiet night....🙏🏻💙#manifestingamiracle #onedayclosertowellness
After surgery Bob enjoyed some hospital provided snacks. Once we were home, I took a little mental health break and walked around TJ MAXX. I was so nervous about the future that I was silently praying the Hail Mary on repeat. Suddenly I happened upon this magnificent canvas of The Blessed Mother. There are no accidents in life……
On January 14, 2020 we were devastated to suddenly lose our beloved sister in law, Patty Talbot. Patty was one of Bob’s biggest prayer warriors and a cheerleader for Kayleigh, always there to celebrate her milestones and successes. She was a beautiful soul and we will miss her forever.
UPDATE ON BOB 1/29/20
Today we met with Bob’s oncologist to determine our next steps in his journey to wellness.
The results of the CT scan showed no change since the last scan on December 4. (To be fair, he only had one chemo during that time due to the infection.) The doctor noted the possibility of one new nodule on the lungs but didn’t seem overly concerned stating that it was an “area of inflammation.”
The plan moving forward will be a new “cocktail” of chemo administered every 3 weeks with scans every 3 months. There is NO END in site with this treatment which left us both feeling a bit bummed as we both were hoping for an end goal.
As the oncologist stated, Bob “has been through hell” these last 7.5 months. He hopes the new concoction will be better tolerated and produce the same positive results. Surgery is NOT on the table.
Neuropathy continues to be the most awful and long lasting side effect. It affects Bob’s hands, feet and legs making many tasks difficult and painful. Sadly there is no quick fix as the meds that caused this effect will remain in his system for some time. We were shocked when the doctor said he MAY begin to feel some relief in his hands in about a year😳!!!
Chemo today was pretty uneventful. It was good to see our favorite nurse Carmen and discuss the new plan with her. We followed chemo with a visit to the rectal surgeon who evaluated the wound and infection site as “ looking good!!!” He felt that after 23 treatments of the IV antibiotics, he is comfortable with Bob stopping treatment. He will confirm that plan with the infectious disease doctor today and hopefully our nighttime ritual of syringes, pic lines and boxes filled with medicines will come to an end.
We are still digesting all of this and continue to feel hopeful. We talked a lot about trying to get back to a “normal life” as much as we can on the weeks that Bob doesn’t have chemo. It sounds like chemo is just going to have to be a part of our “new normal.”
We hope to build Bob’s strength and stamina little by little. The doctor has suggested walking as much as he can each day to help with this. We are looking forward to some walks in the Great Swamp as the weather gets warmer!🥰
Thank you for the continued prayers and abundant love!! It has been truly amazing and we continue to be humbled by the overwhelming kindness and generous support!!
PLEASE KEEP PRAYING!!! We believe so much in the power of prayer and we know that together we are....
#manifestingamiracle!!!! ❤️
On February 9 we enjoyed a nice Sunday afternoon in the Great Swamp with our dear friends Ernie and Jen.
UPDATE ON BOB 2/19/20
Bob returned to the infusion center today after a 3 week hiatus. Having the extra week between treatments has been glorious!!! It has allowed Bob to regain a feeling of “normalcy” and it’s allowed us to socialize a bit and just LIVE LIFE!!!Talk about a gift from God!!!
Today’s treatment went well. Dr. Wax said Bob’s numbers look good and he commented that Bob looks the best he’s EVER seen him!!!🥰. Bob feels ok right now and we pray the side effects will be minimal.
Last week Bob saw the surgeon for his wound. Here too, he got a good report. Dr. Abir feels the wound is healing nicely and told Bob that he doesn’t need to see him for 2 months! Yahoo!!!
That’s about it.... it’s so nice to have very little to report. Next treatment will be in 3 weeks and scans in a couple of months. We keep visualizing the liver and lung tumors melting away in the same way the rectal tumor did but for now we are just grateful for these “ordinary days!”
Please join us in our continued prayers. We feel them every moment of every day! #Godisgreat #manifestingamiracle
We are truly blessed with the best of friends! Our great pals Deb and Steve planned a day out for us including a trip to Sunken Silo Brewery along with lunch from Metropolitan Fish Market. It was such a fun day catching up, trying new beers and enjoying delicious treats. The bonus was that Deb and Steve provided the transportation so that we could really relax and enjoy the day! It was a wonderful Sunday afternoon!
As we continued to live life as normally and fully as possible, we enjoyed weekend walks at the zoo, cozy fires in the fireplace and time spent at our favorite Irish Pub, Kilkenny House. We also made sure to remind our friends that March is colorectal awareness month.
UPDATE ON BOB 3/11/20
Bob returned to chemo today so it’s time for another update. 😃
We’ve had some gloriously normal days over the last couple weeks since his last treatment and those are days we cherish!
Since we knew chemo was this week, and that Bob would likely feel crummy for the weekend, we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day last Saturday with some smoked corned beef and a few good friends. It was the first time Bob cooked in 9 months and he truly enjoyed himself. He took breaks through the evening and was exhausted the next day but it was worth it to see him happy and enjoying 🍀HIS DAY🍀
On Sunday Bob woke up with a strange allergic reaction all over his body. After conferring with the oncologist, it was determined that he needed to be checked out. We were incredibly apprehensive about going to urgent care but we followed doctors orders. Bob waited in the car until he was called to see the doctor and gratefully, although the cause was undetermined, Benadryl and Prednisone helped him feel better.
We were supposed to see a different oncologist today because Dr. Wax was meant to be in Portugal. Boy were we happy to find that he had canceled his trip and he was there to treat Bob. He explained that Bob’s 5FU part of chemotherapy can cause skin toxicity and therefore may have contributed to what happened Sunday.
We talked a lot about Covid-19 and how to keep Bob safe. We need to be practicing SOCIAL DISTANCING and though we aren’t going to be living in a bunker, we are also avoiding crowds, public places and quite frankly, PEOPLE, 😂! I know It sounds silly to many but healthy people can be carriers and since Bob is compromised we need to be as safe as we can. Of course regular good health habits such as hand washing, healthy eating and hydrating are also ways to keep his immune system performing at its best.
Chemo was uneventful although longer than usual because the pharmacy exhaust hood faulted and caused a delay in mixing meds. I was grateful to have started knitting recently as it gave me something zen to do which was far better than looking at my phone.....
We are thrilled Kayleigh will be home for spring break Friday! Scranton has extended break an extra week and will then go online March 30 for courses until April 14. There are zero cases in Lackawanna County but we appreciate their effort to keep everyone safe.
That’s about it for the update. Thanks for all the continued support and prayers. We are truly the most blessed family I know!
Please keep praying, not only for Bob but for our world as we navigate this frightening new virus!
#manifestingamiracle #Godisgreat #washyourhands #socialdistancing #itsnotyouitsus
Photos from our annual St. Patrick’s Day party. As usual Bob cooked the most amazing meal and we had fun celebrating with our friends.
UPDATE ON BOB 4/1
These last 3 weeks have seemed like the twilight zone! 😳
We have been in full quarantine since March 13 in order to protect Bob. We’ve done really well with finding creative ways to have supplies delivered but they are left at the door and highly sanitized before coming in. We avoid take out delivery because I’m nutty about germs. I even Lysol the mail each day! It’s exhausting but completely worth protecting our home from germs.
The good news is that we do really well together. We have developed a nice rhythm to our days and we are grateful to have a safe warm place and most importantly, EACH OTHER!
Both Bob and I have been beyond busy with work. We have breakfast together around 6 and then both retreat to our “office” until about 5. Amazingly his business is extremely busy in this crisis which is wonderful especially considering what is happening in the world. As for me, this old lady has learned more technology in 3 weeks than I’ve learned in my 54 years!!! It’s crazy and stressful but somehow we are creatively meeting the needs of all the students and seeing and speaking to them face to face!
It’s such a joy to have Kayleigh here although she is heartbroken she cannot return to school. She enjoyed a 2 week spring break of sleeping in and staying up late. She began classes Monday and has been busy ever since. I love having all of us around the dinner table each night so I consider this one of the blessings of this crazy time!
So, today Bob was scheduled for chemo. We know he needs it but the idea of leaving our cocoon of safety scared the hell out of us. We were happy to hear the location had been changed to a building for only chemo patients. I was heartbroken to learn that for the first time in 10 months I could not be by Bob’s side. 😢 Though this was for everyone’s safety, it was still so hard for me. I like to be in control and this was just another part of the pandemic that stole control away from me.
I’m happy to report that things went as well as they could. Bob was armed with a mask, gloves, sanitizer and wipes. I was able to facetime in when he met with the doctor who reported good blood counts and low tumor markers. Bob then moved to the infusion room where each chair was behind glass partitions and fully protected as well as was possible. He did not have “our nurse” Carmen. We found out later from text that she had been ill with a sinus infection but since she had a fever had to be cleared with a covid test even though she had no symptoms other than a fever. Thankfully she now feels perfectly fine and has been fever free but cannot return to work until she gets her results. We are happy to know they take such serious precautions!!
All went well with Chemo thank God. Bob returned home and fully washed and sanitized. He’s back at the computer working hard! We will now continue our quarantine until he needs to see the doctor again.
Thank you for your continued prayers. It seems our hearts are on a 24 hr/7 day a week prayer loop for everyone in the world. This is truly the scariest time we have ever lived through. We keep all of you in our daily prayers❤️🙏🏻!
Wishing you continued safety and good health. May you see this time at home as a blessing more than a punishment. We continue to know that together we are #manifestingamiracle !!!
Quarantine had us finding new ways to have fun. We’d have happy hours on zoom or outdoors with our neighbors. When we were outside, we remained on our porch in order to keep away from any potential germs. We laughed saying we resembled the two old men from the muppets who talk from their balcony far away from everyone else.
We attended church, played bingo with other people in town and celebrated Easter on ZOOM. We even took cooking lessons and learned to make homemade mozzarella! Bob decided to see just how long he could grown his beard. He was also elated when he found he could order old fashioned Charles Chips to be delivered to the house!
UPDATE ON BOB 5/13
Bob had a CT scan on Monday 5/11. We usually get results by the evening and we waited anxiously to hear what we hoped would be more miraculous news. The call didn’t come Monday or Tuesday. Since Bob was scheduled for chemo today we knew we’d finally hear the update.
Unfortunately today’s news was not the miracle we had hoped for. Although the CT scan shows no visible tumor in the rectum, the tumor in the liver has grown by 1/2 cm. This is concerning and has changed the plan of action.
Dr. Wax mixed up a new cocktail, nicknamed FOLFIRI . This combination is more aggressive and with God’s Grace it will effectively knock out the tumor in his body.
The side effects are different...though equally unpleasant. Now on top of nausea, Bob can look forward to diarrhea and possible hair loss. He will receive chemo every other week again taking away that bonus week of chemo free life he’s been enjoying for the last few months.
The doctor has also ordered a lot of further scans. He has an MRI AND PET scan in the next few weeks. Liver surgery is again a possibility.
This news took our breath away today. We’d fallen into a nice rhythm and life actually felt pretty “normal.” We weren’t expecting this....BUT, as Bob so calmly reminds me, a Cancer diagnosis is filled with peaks and valleys.....
We plan to fight this ugly monster every step of the way. We will return to a plant based/alkaline diet. It’s time to eliminate the sugary comfort foods that have crept back into our diets during this pandemic. We will beat this!
So, that’s where we stand. We are a bit shell shocked but ok. We ask that you please keep the prayers coming, we need them now more than ever. As always, together we will be #manifestingamiracle.
May27, 2020
Hi Guys!
Not sending a huge update but wanted to let you know that We are thrilled to share that Bob’s scans showed no new surprises. Yes, liver tumors have grown but rectal tumors are GONE!!! Lung lesions remain a puzzle. They look to be there but the Doctor is inconclusive on how serious they are.
Our present plan is to continue this new aggressive chemo. Bob had round 2 today. Surgery is not off the table to remove liver tumors but that’s a discussion for down the line.
We are praying the horrific fatigue and side effects get easier for Bob this time. Thanks for your continued prayers. #manifestingamiracle
June 11, 2020
Just a quick post chemo update on Bob:
Yesterday Bob had his 3rd session of the new more aggressive chemo. These meds have been really rough on him, allowing him only a few “good days” per month.
Yesterday’s blood tests indicated that Bob’s WBC was dangerously low so the doctor scheduled him for a Nulesta shot which will stimulate his bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. This is particularly scary as things begin to “open up....”
Presently Bob is EXTREMELY susceptible to infection and therefore the doctor has advised that we continue to get things delivered, avoid stores and public gatherings. This part has been one of the hardest. The isolation is tough, especially on Kayleigh who has had to say no to some (many) of the things her pals are doing. Thank God the three of us really enjoy each other! It is hard though and will be tougher as more and more people go back to life as it used to be.
We continue to pray that these meds are doing what they are meant to and we REALLY take advantage of the days when Bob feels well.
Not much more to update than that.... just keep praying! #manifestingamiracle
In order to get out and remain safe we sought out creative solutions. One day we took a ride to eastern PA to check out the covered bridges and then stopped to visit friends who lived nearby. As you can see from the photos, the visit was at a very good distance, outside with masks. We also discovered a new walking trail in nearby Linden where we explored with masks on.
The University of Scranton decided classes would not resume in person and asked students to collect their belongings. Thank God once again for our dear friend Maria who drove Kayleigh and I out to school and helped us pack everything to return home!
UPDATE ON BOB 7/8/20
Bob has had 4 rounds of the new more aggressive chemo, Fulfuri so the doctor ordered scans to assess the efficacy of this new cocktail.
Today we learned that it is having a small but positive impact, mostly on the lung nodules, so he will continue this treatment at least for another 4 rounds.
We also learned that Bob’s WBC count is critically low. Obviously this is extremely concerning considering the current pandemic. Luckily we still observe full quarantine protocol. The doctor reminded Bob to be EXTREMELY cautious this next week especially until he gets the Nulesta shot on Friday to stimulate his bone marrow to make more WBC.
The rest of the day was uneventful. Though we drove together so that I could be there for the scan results, I am still not allowed in the infusion room. While Bob received his treatment I explored the Florham Park campus and surrounding areas. I was able to log 6.5 walking miles and I even found a beautiful lake surrounded by scattered Adirondack chairs where I sat for an hour, watched the wildlife and pretended I was on vacation! Lol.
Bob is home chillin now. He’s ready for the crappy way this cocktail will make him feel because he knows this is all for the greater good. Please keep the prayers coming. We know they make a difference! #manifestingamiracle #quarantinelife #thankGodweenjoyeachotherscompany
Haircuts outside, cocktails inside….. Drive in movie to see Jaws!
Bob had a PERFECT Father’s Day spent doing exactly what he wanted; smoking meat, drinking Bloody Mary’s and listening to his favorite Blues station!
Unbelievably, we lost our other Talbot sister in law Debbie at the end of June 2020. Debbie was the sweetest woman to ever walk the earth. She battled cancer, diabetes and many other ailments in her later years but it never stopped her from having a smile and a kind word for everyone she met. Debbie was a very big part of Bob’s life, having married into the family when Bob was ten. Losing both of his sisters in law within months of each other hit us very hard. Life is so fragile!
We spent the 4th of July chilling together. For our big treat, we visited the local brewery where we were able to use COVID RULES to take out draft beer!
Other photo is from my peaceful sanctuary on the Florham Park campus of the medical center.
Summer 2020 found us with some generous invitations from friends that we desperately wanted to accept. Dr. Wax gave his blessing as long as we wore masks and only visited with friends while outdoors. We accepted his restrictions and jumped at the chance to visit our friends Molly and Roy in Cayuga lake as well as our friends Jen, Ernie, Laurie and Frank in Saranac Lake.
These getaways were exactly what we needed! Bob had plenty of fishing time and even got in the water at Cayuga. Our accommodations and meals were creative and we still got to spend time with the people we love! Photos below are from both of those trips.
UPDATE ON BOB SEPTEMBER 9, 2020
It’s been awhile since we’ve sent a Bob update. Here’s the latest:
As you know, Bob has been on a more aggressive chemo for the last 16 weeks. After the first 4 treatments the doctor felt he saw a minimal improvement in Bob’s lung tumors so we stayed the course and continued for 4 more treatments. These treatments were extremely rough on Bob but we prayed they were doing their job. Yesterday he had a scan to assess just that. Unfortunately the chemo is not working and the scan showed small growth in both liver and lungs. So it’s time to reassess.
Dr. Wax put Bob back on the treatment he had in the beginning ( remember this is the one that made the miracle....🙏🏻)! It is called Folfox and contains the drug that has caused Bob’s terrible neuropathy. Though the doctor took that drug out of the cocktail in December because of the horrific side effect, he has now put it back into the mix because the benefit outweighs side effects. As Bob said, “ he’d rather walk around feeling like his legs are stumps rather than not walk around at all...”
So we continue the roller coaster ride! Today was treatment #25. This is a LONG ROAD. Due to Bob’s treatment and immune system, we continue to stay protected by remaining vigilant. Although I have (reluctantly) returned to school, I enter our home from the garage, immediately wash my clothing and hop in the shower. We continue to have everything delivered and although the situation is not ideal, we are amazed at what we can make work.
We still believe that God is good and that despite this bump in the road, Bob will be healed. Please continue to pray for the doctor’s wisdom and a complete full recovery and return to good health for Bob.
As always, we are #manifestingamiracle ❤️
Labor Day Weekend was an an absolute blast! We spent a blissful day at the Warwick Valley Winery and visited out dear friends at the beach. When school started I was thrilled to know that I was beginning my very LAST FIRST DAY of teaching!
Update on Bob 9/23 2020
Bob had a big day today. He had a check up with the rectal surgeon as well as chemo. Happily, his bottom looks good. The Seton will remain in place until treatment ends and Bob is thrilled to not have a follow up with that doctor for a while. We are praying that his bottom remains unaffected especially since he’s back on the first chemo cocktail. Thoughts of last fall scare the both of us to death.
Next came his check up before chemo. The good news is, his blood levels look good today so no need for a nulesta bone marrow shot but the bad news is that the neuropathy symptoms have already worsened in his hands and feet.
We also took some time to discuss “the plan” now that we’ve had a bit of time to digest the scan results. I asked if surgery was still on the table and we were sad to hear the answer of no. Since he has cancer on both liver and lungs and the last 16 weeks didn’t help, surgery would be way too much on his body.
So.... THE PLAN is to continue on this chemo every 2 weeks praying it shrinks things and doesn’t allow growth. (and the side effects are bearable.) I asked if it was likely chemo would make all of the cancer disappear and sadly heard, not likely. As the doctor said, Bob will remain on this until something new and better comes along. (So we’ve added that new discovery to our prayers!!!)
That news was hard to hear but didn’t stop our faith. It’s been a rough couple of weeks filled with the sadness of the passing of 2 people Bob loved, both the dad of one of his best friends and our friend Joann who was Bob’s secretary for many years. It’s been a really hard year....😢
Bob’s spirit remains strong. He had Dr. Wax belly laughing today with his humor. 😉 He continues to work from home every single day no matter how he feels. We, of course make the most of every day he feels well. We continue to take ALL precautions to keep Bob healthy and free of any infections or viruses. Thanks to the generosity of our dear friends, Bob is able to watch the Steelers from home with the NFL TICKET. We truly are blessed!
Please keep the prayers coming in abundance. We know that through prayer we can make a miracle!! We know Bob is going to kick cancer’s ass!!
#manifestingamiracle
A beautiful start to autumn allowed us to enjoy long walks along the NJ boardwalk and outdoor dinners and bonfires with friends! As always Bob was cracking the jokes and keeping everyone entertained!
Update on Bob 11/4/20
Bob had a scan yesterday to assess the efficacy of the last 8 weeks of treatment. The results were not what we had hoped. They did show a tiny reduction in one liver tumor but also small growth in the other liver tumor and lung tumors. Though we were quite crushed the doctor was not as dismayed. He feels that the changes are small enough in both directions that it can be attributed to being within the boundaries of reader interpretation. He felt strongly that we should stay the course and that Bob should continue with 8 more weeks of this cocktail followed by another scan at the very end of the year.
Bob’s white blood cells have dipped again so he will have another Nulesta shot on Friday. We continue to keep ourselves isolated in order to best protect him from any kind of germs.
This has been a LONG road but my amazing husband continues to have a fighter’s attitude and told the doc to “bring it on!” He is truly my hero because this is an unbelievable battle.
Please continue to pray. We know the prayers are working and they mean so much to us. We have great hope and we believe in miracles.
#manifestingamiracle
The holidays had us isolated, visiting with loved ones outdoors yet feeling the strength of our love as a family of 3! One of our greatest surprises EVER was when 20 of our friends showed up outside our home serenading us with Christmas Carols. It was one of the most memorable, and touching nights we have ever experienced. Talk about feeling like we were living in a Hallmark Movie! Our hearts overflowed knowing how much we are loved!
Update on Bob 1/6/21
I know it’s been awhile since we’ve updated you on Bob’s health. Here’s the latest.
Bob had a scan Monday to assess how the last 4 chemotherapy treatments have worked. Today we learned of the results.
We are pleased to report that although the cancer has not shrunk, it also has NOT grown!!! The doctor reports that things are stable and that is a GOOD thing! As he said, Bob is alive!🥰🙏🏻
Bob has had a rough go of it lately battling neutropenia twice in the last month as well as extreme exhaustion. Today’s blood numbers looked good, he will not require Nulesta this round. With these good blood numbers we are hopeful that this round of chemo won’t completely incapacitate him as it has been doing recently.
We continue to pray for Bob to feel strong and healthy as he continues to battle. We revel in the days when he feels somewhat normal. We know these “good” days and all of our positive news is the result of all the people who are constantly praying for him. Please continue praying. It’s been a very long and tumultuous road, compounded by the isolation due to Covid, but we know that through prayer this story will include a happy ending filled with many miracles!!! Thank you as always for all the love and support! #manifestingamiracle
Update on. Bob 3/4/21
We’ve just left the oncologist and we are numb. Bob’s scan shows growth in liver and lungs. Chemo has stopped working.
There is a drug Bob can try that has a 1/3 effectiveness rating in stopping tumor growth but it will not start for 2 weeks if he decides to take it. Drug trials are another option but we are on our own to find them.
We will be immersing ourselves in research and plan to also return to Sloan to see about trials or alternate treatment plans.
This is A LOT to take in right now and we’re just going to lie low and digest it awhile. Please please please pray for Bob. The world is a much better place with Bob Talbot in it. We need to keep him here! #manifestingamiracle 💙🙏🏻
UPDATE ON BOB 3/31/21
Ever since hearing the news that Bob’s chemotherapy stopped killing his cancer we have been on a quest to find a new solution.
We’ve made the most dramatic change to our eating habits yet. We have eliminated refined carbs and all sugar from our diets and are eating a plant based, lean protein diet. We both feel great and are very committed to doing what we know is very healthy for our bodies, cancer or not.
We’ve also been fully immersed in exploring absolutely every option available. We’ve consulted with doctors across the country both virtually and in person.
Unfortunately due to the mutation of Bob’s cancer, there are not any trials currently available ANYWHERE. We learned of one potential alternate treatment but the risks of hospitalization and other horrific side effects prevented us from using that one.
We received the most hope from a renowned liver surgeon, Dr. Fong from the City of Hope in California. He obtained a special temporary license to meet with us virtually in NJ. He felt that Bob COULD be a candidate for liver surgery but also advised that we are very close to great medical care (Memorial Sloan Kettering) and he referred us to his colleague Dr. DeAngelica; another highly respected liver surgeon specializing in COLORECTAL CANCER.
Our oncologist at MSK consulted with Dr. D and they presented Bob’s case to the tumor board last Thursday. At that time the tumor board concluded that although it would be complicated, Bob could be a candidate for a liver resection or the HAI pump. Now they wanted to meet with us!!!
On Monday we went to NYC where Bob had an MRI at one location and then we met with 2 surgeons at another MSK location. At that time they explained everything about how each of the surgeries work, their benefits and risks. They still felt they wanted to fully analyze the MRI and told us they’d get back to us within a week with a plan.
Yesterday our hearts broke when Dr. DeAngelica called to say that after really analyzing everything, he does not feel that now is the right time for surgery. He feels the risks outweigh the benefits. Though we are grateful that he’s not a “surgical cowboy”, it hurt to lose the hope we had in surgically removing the cancer.
So, after a month of leaving no stone unturned, Bob will begin taking the Stirvaga this morning. It is a biological drug but has many potentially awful side effects similar to chemo. We remain positive and hopeful that Bob will be part of the group of people that this drug works for.
In the meantime we are going to try our best to live life to the absolute fullest everyday! We are going to take a trip to Hilton Head in April and we will plan another vacation for the summer when Kayleigh is home.
We have felt the power of your prayers on every step of this journey, please continue them with a vengeance!!! Maybe this pill is our miracle or maybe there is something else that will emerge down the line. We know it’s out there. Please just keep Praying!! ❤️🙏🏻 #manifestingamiracle
On Good Friday we attempted to take our annual hike on the Cushetunk Trail at Round Valley. It was COLD and Bob’s energy was low so we stopped after reaching the bench. Of course we stopped at Metropolitan Fish Market for our annual haul on the way home. Easter found us isolating again but once again we were blessed with abundant surprises and deliveries from those we love. Holiday visits were outside again…..
In April we decided to take a trip to our favorite vacation spot, Hilton Head Island with our best pals Jen and Ernie. Despite the fact that Bob had just begun a new medication with potentially nasty side effects, he drove all the way from NJ to SC! We had a wonderful adventure with stops in MD and NC to visit Bob’s brother Al.
The trip was one we will never forget! It was filled with beautiful weather, great food and drink and plenty of laughter. The stories that came from that trip are hysterical!
Bob, being the avid fisherman, chartered a boat for us to fish together. The day before our trip had been 83 degrees but when we awoke on the day of our excursion we found the temperature had dropped 30 degrees! On the water it was even colder! Though we froze our little patooties off, Bob was able to catch some delicious fish! Our captain suggested that we take our catch to a local restaurant where they cooked us up the most delicious lunch we have ever had!
Bob turned 55 on May 4, 2021. In honor of this milestone birthday, I asked all of the people who love Bob to write him a letter to share a special memory they had together. The response was OVERWHELMING! I filled not one but two scrap books with these stories and the photos that came along with them. The books are an absolute treasure and a testament to the great guy Bob is. I presented the books to Bob as he enjoyed his morning coffee and is reaction was priceless. He was truly moved.
We spent the rest of the day celebrating exactly as Bob wished. We enjoyed lunch outside at our favorite Irish pub, Kilkenny’s where Bob had his usual spicy chicken sandwich and a Guinness. Later he had a glass of his favorite Irish Whiskey, Redbreast while I enjoyed an Irish coffee. If stranger had observed our lunch and Bob’s banter with the owner, one would never have guessed at the battle Bob was fighting.
UPDATE ON BOB 6/16/21
I know it’s been awhile since we’ve updated you all and that’s because we’ve been in kind of a nice period. Bob has been taking a biological drug meant to stabilize his cancer. He’s had limited side effects and has felt pretty good. Sadly, after a scan yesterday, we’ve learned that the drug did not do what it was supposed to and one of the tumors on his liver had doubled in size.
So now we are on to the next plan. Bob will begin taking a 2 drug chemo which again is meant to stabilize the cancer. This combo has some pretty crappy (literally) side effects, including dramatic drops in blood counts. This one may be harder to take. Unfortunately this is our last shot. Right now unless science comes up with a new treatment, this is all that is left in the bag of tricks. We are praying this makes a difference. There is some research to indicate it’s worth a try.
Please keep praying for us. Tomorrow will be exactly 2 years since diagnosis. As always, Bob has the most incredible attitude and knows he’s going to kick some cancer ass……but it’s hard…. 🙏🏻
we continue…#manifestingamiracle
This was a glorious period of time filled with so much fun and many adventures! We spent time with so many friends celebrating birthdays, vacations, retirement and simply just “the good life! Bob fulfilled my lifelong dream of spending my first day of retirement on the beach in LBI. We were joined by friends who shared a long weekend with us exploring all the best bars and restaurants on the island. Make sure to note Bob’s photo as “Ultraman” in the bottom row above. It was a truly a magical time!
Update 10/14/21
In mid September we learned that Bob’s cancer had grown, the medication he had been taking was not working. The doctor advised us that sadly he had nothing left to offer. We’ve kept this to ourselves as we’ve tried to digest and process it. Obviously it’s A LOT!!!
About ten days ago, Dr. Wax called and said he’d been in touch with a researcher at Mt. Siani and he felt we should give him a call. We did and we’ve just returned from our second visit to the city. They have 2 potential trials that Bob may qualify for. These are phase 1 which means they are beginning stage trials and they carry a lot of risk. However they are intriguing and Bob will try anything that may give him even an extra day.
The trips to the city are the worst part. They are long and stressful, taking us over 2 hours each way, each time
Despite being off all medications, Bob feels crappy. His energy is low and he’s nauseous every day. Recently he’s developed a cough we hope is allergies.
Bobs health and wellness are our only focus right now. We avoid stress and we count our blessings daily. We believe in miracles so we fully believe that he will qualify and have success with one of these studies. Please keep praying, add him to any and every prayer list possible. Bob’s story has a lot more happy chapters!
#Manifestingamiracle
NOTE : No updates were sent during this exhausting time. We tried to make the best of the trips to NY but they were grueling. Early on we realized the drive was far too much for Bob and we hired a local car service, Clover Coaches. What a gift from God they were. Chris, the owner of the company, took us in and picked us up sometimes 3 times a week. He seemed to really understand when we were happy to chat and when we just needed to sit quietly. He kept us safe and sane and became like a member of the family. During this time Bob and I made plans, (I am a girl who likes a plan….) We discussed what we would do when we heard the good results from the treatment and how we looked forward to another Christmas miracle. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen……
We were always so grateful for all of the little things. Time spent with friends at porch fest in Cranford and a dinner near the reservation in Scotch Plains. We reveled in the surprise of a stretch limo picking us up after treatment for a “SWANKY’ ride home. Little did Chris, the owner of Clover Coaches know, but that was 2 days before our wedding anniversary so it was an extra special ride for us!
Update on Bob 12/20/21
We are heartbroken to share that the results of Bob’s most recent scan indicate the trial was unsuccessful and the cancer in Bob’s liver has grown significantly. Adding to this, Bob has developed a few complications; one of which is called ascites. This has caused an extreme amount of fluid to accumulate in his abdomen creating a tight and uncomfortable feeling.
Although we were supposed to hear the results of the scan today, we were surprised to actually be told this news last Wednesday. In a way, it has given us time to process this as a family before sharing it with those we love. If we’ve spoken to you in the last week and “fibbed to you” about not getting results until today, we hope you understand. This is beyond hard…..
On Wednesday Bob decided he was done with the long commutes and tedious days in NYC. Mount Siani really didn’t have anything else to offer us and the trips back and forth took a real toll on Bob. We reached back out to his original oncologist and arranged to continue care here in NJ. We met with his NJ team on Friday. It felt good to be back with the people who feel like family. Sadly, the news really isn’t great. Bob will now be on what is called palliative care. There will no longer be treatments meant to cure or stop the cancer, but he will receive treatments to make him comfortable and increase quality of life. One of these treatments will be having his belly drained on Tuesday through interventional radiology.
The doctor said the words we never wanted to hear when he mentioned it was time for hospice. I told him I was a little insulted because I know I am an incredible caregiver. He explained that hospice is just there to make things easier. A nurse will come out once a week to do vitals so that Bob no longer needs to go to the office. She will assist with medications and ensure comfort. He also explained that those words don’t mean a death sentence and that as soon as some new amazing treatment is discovered, Bob can come off hospice for the treatment. You know we still believe our miracle is out there so this was comforting to hear.❤️🙏🏻
Bob is very very tired these days. He spends his days moving from the couch to the bed. His cough is bad though he does get some relief from a cough medicine that has been prescribed to him. We were looking forward to making memories with those we love this season but many of our plans have been canceled due to covid. It’s hard to imagine we are heading back into this crazy covid isolation again.
This update has been the hardest one to write. I’ve started and stopped it many times over the last 5 days. There are no words to describe the heartbreak we are living through. Please keep all of us in your continued prayers. Our faith is strong, and during this holiday week of miracles we continue to believe we are #manifestingamiracle
We spent Christmas at home with visits from those we love. We honored our traditions including receiving a book for Christmas Eve and reading while indulging in chocolate! Bob grew weaker during this time and eventually we asked for a hospital bed from hospice as well as other palliative care. The hospice workers were angels on Earth!
It will sound strange to say but if death can be beautiful, Bob’s journey home was. Though more tired now, he spend days surrounded by those he loved, sharing stories and laughter despite the circumstances. A fire remained in the fireplace and good music was played throughout. Bob got to watch the last Steeler game at Heinz field and no matter how weak he was he greeted each guest and always kissed Kayleigh and I goodnight followed by “I love you.” He did not want to give up, although his body was dying, his spirit was so strong.
Bob lost his battle on the morning of January 19, 2022 as Kayleigh and I held his hands and sent him to God with love. Our lives will never be the same but they are so rich because Bob was a part of them.
